Ankle spatting has become popular among college American football players and is often performed in combination with normal ankle taping (closed basket weave sports tape taping technique on top of quick-drying tape adherent and pre-wrap applied against the skin), giving the players’ ankles 2 total layers of tape. Athletes sometimes request spatting because they feel their ankles as being more supported, and hence better protected from injuries, in comparison to standard taping alone.

Spatting is a taping technique which is effectively a method of applying tape over the boot to stabilise the ankle joint within the boot. It creates a rigid wrap holding the ankle firmly in place with the added support of the boot to stabilise the ankle.
